October 2, 2012
A fortnight of intense actions for seed freedom will be held beginning on Gandhi’s birth Anniversary and will continue until World Food Day. The purpose of these intense actions is to draw as much public and government attention to the issue of Seed Freedom as possible so as to invoke changes in policy for the future of seeds and farmers in India and across the world.
Actions will Include:
- Write to Patent Offices insisting that they stop granting patents on seed
- Write to WTO, insisting the completion of the mandatory review of the TRIPS article 27.3 b which forces patents on life forms
- Write to President Obama, insisting he stop using the White House to bully countries on behalf of Monsanto, destroying their seed sovereignty through GMOs and patents
- Encourage and partake in the saving, sharing, planting of open-pollinated seeds while also encouraging people to begin their own gardens
In a way to ‘SAVE SEEDS’, we have started, The ‘Home Gardens’ project which will contribute to making Amatsiko primarily self-sufficient, a goal it hopes to achieve soon. The project will not only allow for this but also aims at teaching local people latest permaculture technologies that aim at replenishing the depleted natural resources, empowering them, enabling them to create their own source of income as well as being able to improve nutritional levels in the community.

I’mma Indigenous Permacultist and, for various reasons, i’m not doing any farming/gardening/chicken chasing this southern hemisphere summer. Which creates the challenge of what to do with all the seeds in my modest-ish seed bank that are approaching the end of their viability. Solution: post me a a self-addressed envelope and i will stuff that envelope with seeds and post it back. Feel free to enclose suggestions of what seeds you’d like but I make no promises.
14/09/2012 – We will be gathering all our food, herb and flower seeds from this years growth with volunteers at Growing Connections Friday sessions. Working together we will dry, label and store seeds ready for next years planting. Volunteers will be able to take some seeds home with instructions for storing and planting now or in the Spring 2013.

With the verdict of the European Court on July 12th, the ban on trading of traditional and biodiverse seeds, which have not been registered in the official European catalogue has been confirmed. Since 1998 a European directive is in force, which confines the trading and the exchange of seeds to the seeds companies (Corporations). Seed is the source of life, it is the self urge of life to express itself, to renew itself, to multiply, to evolve in perpetuity in freedom. There is no Food Freedom without Seed Freedom.
Sit-in and free seed exchange in front of the European Justice Court will be a citizens meeting in front of the Court Building, where everyone should bring seeds to exchange. Belonging to the personal feeling of everyone, he/she can come and simply sit-in, talk and share with others, exchange seeds and knowledge for free or more demonstratively. Knowing that the act of sharing seeds is at this point illegal, as well as meeting for revendications in the place in front of the Court Buildings.
As the part of Fortnight of Action – Slovenia we are organizing an art exhibition called Freedom of life. The exhibition will take place in club Jalla Jalla in Metelkova city in Ljubljana, Slovenia. During all the day, across its social network, Etika Mondo will broadcast films explaining the reason to save seeds, how and why to do permaculture and what solutions exist.

Join us at the Carriage House Farm table as we celebrate the Fortnight of Action for Seed Freedom at Northside Farmers Market October 10th. A volunteer will have information about what seeds are the easiest to start saving, as well as resources if you would like to learn more. Additionally, we will have info about open pollinated, heirloom, hybrid, and GMO seeds. We will share examples of seed actions we are taking, and why we feel seed saving is good for nature and for maintaining plant diversity. There will also be lots of seed giveaways: vegetables, herbs, and wildflowers including seeds grown at Carriage House Farm.
